What to bring: the Narrows gear and checklist. Rules: what not to do in The Narrows.
Before you go
- The route closes when the river flows above 150 cubic feet per second and during a Flash Flood Warning. It stays closed for 2 hours after a warning lifts.
- Wear closed-toe shoes, carry a sturdy stick or poles, and dress in quick-dry layers (NPS).
- The top-down 16-mile route from Chamberlain’s Ranch needs a Wilderness permit.
- Trails and roads close for rockfall, floods, and ice. Check NPS current conditions the morning you go.
- Carry plenty of water. NPS recommends at least one gallon per person per day.
